River Rock
Also known as: river stone, rounded rock
River rock is naturally smooth, rounded stone shaped by flowing water, sold in sizes from about 3/4 inch up to several inches. It is a durable decorative ground cover used in dry creek beds, around plants and for drainage accents.
In simple terms
River rock is the smooth, rounded stone you would find in a riverbed. It comes in a range of earthy colors and sizes and gives beds a clean, natural look that never needs replacing like bark does.
In depth
River rock spans grades from small (3/4–1 inch) through medium (1–3 inch) to large (3–6 inch) and cobble sizes beyond. Its rounded form means it drains freely but does not compact, so it stays loose. It is typically installed 2–3 inches deep over landscape fabric. Larger river rock doubles as erosion control in swales and dry creek beds, slowing and directing runoff while looking like a natural watercourse.
Why it matters
River rock is permanent, fire-resistant and low-maintenance — it does not decompose, blow away or need annual topping up like organic mulch, making it ideal for water-wise, low-upkeep landscapes.
Common mistakes
- Using rounded river rock on a walking path where it shifts underfoot.
- Installing without fabric and edging, so rock sinks into soil and mixes with mud.
Examples & uses
- Dry creek beds and drainage swales.
- Decorative ground cover in low-water beds.
- Borders and accents around boulders and plantings.
