Frequently Asked Questions

Topsoil is the bulk planting soil; compost is decomposed organic matter you mix into soil to enrich it. The best planting beds blend the two — screened topsoil for volume and compost for nutrients, structure and moisture retention.

Screened topsoil is sifted to remove rocks and clumps for a uniform texture ideal for lawns and garden beds. Unscreened topsoil is cheaper and coarser, better suited to bulk fill and raising grade than to planting.

Work 1–3 inches of compost into the top 6–8 inches of soil. Compost opens up tight clay for drainage and root growth and feeds soil life. Gypsum can also help loosen compacted clay. This is the single most effective fix for the region’s clay-heavy ground.

Calculate cubic yards as area (sq ft) × depth (inches) ÷ 324. For a new lawn, 2–4 inches of quality soil is common; for amending beds, a 1–3 inch layer of compost tilled in works well.
