Frequently Asked Questions

Bark mulch is made from the outer bark of trees (fir, cedar, redwood) and is processed into shreds or nuggets for landscape beds. Wood chips include the inner wood and are coarser, often used on pathways and play areas. Bark generally looks more refined in planting beds.

Spread bark 2–3 inches deep — enough to suppress weeds and hold soil moisture without suffocating roots. Keep mulch a few inches away from tree trunks and plant stems to prevent rot.

Larger nuggets and naturally decay-resistant species like fir and redwood last the longest. Shredded bark knits together and stays put on slopes but breaks down faster. Fine bark decomposes soonest but feeds the soil.

Shredded bark is best for slopes because the strands knit together and resist washing away. Avoid large nuggets on slopes or near downspouts, where they tend to float and scatter in heavy rain.

At 3 inches deep, one cubic yard of bark covers about 100 square feet. Use our estimator to size your order. We deliver bark in bulk across Placer County — call (916) 783-9177 for a quote.
