Clear the area, grade it smooth, and lay 2–4 inches of quality topsoil blended with compost over loosened soil. Lightly compact and rake level. Good prep is what lets sod root quickly and evenly.
Sod usually begins rooting within about 2 weeks and is well established in 4–6 weeks with proper watering. Water deeply every day for the first two weeks and avoid heavy foot traffic during that time.
Lay sod the same day it is delivered. Harvested sod is perishable and can yellow or die if left rolled up, especially in summer heat. Plan your soil prep before the sod arrives.
