Pea Gravel
Also known as: pea stone, 3/8 gravel
Pea gravel is small, smooth, rounded stone about the size of a pea (roughly 3/8 inch). It is used for pathways, patios, dog runs, play areas and as a decorative ground cover.
In simple terms
Pea gravel is the little round stone you see on garden paths and around patios. Because the pebbles are smooth and small, it is comfortable underfoot and easy to spread by hand.
In depth
Pea gravel’s rounded shape means it does not interlock or compact, so it stays loose and shifts underfoot — great for permeability and a soft, crunchy surface, but a poor structural base. It drains well and is often laid 2–3 inches deep over landscape fabric within a solid edge (steel, paver or bender board) to keep it contained. For a firmer walking surface, a stabilized base or a binder can be added underneath.
Why it matters
Pea gravel is one of the most affordable, fast-draining and DIY-friendly ground covers — a staple of low-water Placer County yards and a comfortable alternative to bark in play areas.
Common mistakes
- Laying pea gravel with no edging, so it scatters into lawns and walkways.
- Using it as a base under pavers — it rolls and will not compact.
Examples & uses
- Garden pathways and courtyard patios.
- Dog runs and play areas (soft, washable).
- Decorative fill around steppers and fire pits.
