Mason Sand

Also known as: masonry sand, fine sand

Mason sand is a fine, washed, uniform sand used for mortar, brick and block work, paver joints, and as a smooth base for play areas and sandboxes. It is finer and smoother than concrete sand.

In simple terms

Mason sand is soft, fine sand with evenly sized grains. Its smooth texture makes mortar workable and gives a clean finish, and it is gentle enough for sandboxes and play areas.

In depth

Mason sand is washed and screened to a fine, consistent particle size with the grit and gradation suited to masonry. The uniform fineness produces a smooth, spreadable mortar and tidy joints. The same softness makes it popular for filling paver joints, leveling small areas and lining sandboxes. It is not a substitute for coarse concrete sand in structural concrete, where coarser grading is needed for strength.

Why it matters

Mason sand’s fine, uniform texture is what gives masonry a smooth, professional finish and makes it safe and pleasant for play areas.

Common mistakes

  • Using mason sand in structural concrete, where coarse concrete sand is required.
  • Expecting fine mason sand to drain like coarse sand — it holds more moisture.

Examples & uses

  • Mortar for brick, block and stone.
  • Paver and flagstone joint filling.
  • Sandboxes and play surfaces.
