Cobbles
Also known as: cobblestone, landscape cobbles
Cobbles are large rounded or semi-rounded stones, generally 3 to 10 inches across, used for borders, dry creek beds, erosion control and bold decorative accents. They sit between river rock and boulders in size.
In simple terms
Cobbles are the big, fist-to-melon-sized rounded stones that edge beds and line dry creek beds. They are too large to walk on comfortably but perfect for adding structure and a natural, rugged look.
In depth
Cobbles are graded by size range — common bands include 3x6 inch, 4x8 inch and 8 inch-plus — and by color blend. Their mass makes them effective for erosion control on slopes and along drainage channels, where smaller rock would wash away. In dry creek beds they form the channel and banks; in beds they create defined borders and transitions to boulders. Because they are heavy, plan delivery and placement by weight per yard.
Why it matters
Cobbles add scale, permanence and erosion resistance that smaller decorative rock cannot — bridging the gap between gravel beds and large feature boulders.
Common mistakes
- Choosing cobbles for areas you need to walk across — they are uneven and large.
- Underestimating weight; cobbles are heavy, so confirm per-yard weight before hauling.
Examples & uses
- Dry creek bed channels and banks.
- Slope and channel erosion control.
- Bold bed borders and boulder transitions.
